Cross Country PreviewWednesday, September 6, 2017 Newington Boys Head Coach: Jay Krusell (1st season) Last Year: 3-2 Key Losses: Tommy Doyle, Jason Marques, Jason Goldstein Expected Key Returnees: Aiden Toth (Junior), Jeremy Rippel (Junior), Salvatore Scata (Sophomore), Joseph Bohlke (Sophomore) Outlook: After Newington took a step in the right direction last season. It finished with a winning record and a top-10 finish at the Class L meet. And the Indians only figure to get better. Despite losing mainstays in Tommy Doyle, Jason Marques and Jason Goldstein, first-year head coach Jay Krussell has plenty of young runners returning that all contributed at the state meet. Newington will be led by juniors Aiden Toth and Jeremy Rippel along with sophomores Salvatore Scata and Joseph Bohlke. Expectations appear to be high for the Indians and rightfully so. Head Coach: Jen Deschenes-Emord (1st season) Last Year: 1-4 Key Losses: Lucia Visconti Key Returnees: Angelina Zacharias (Senior), Alexa Freitas (Senior), Madelyn Gentile (Sophomore), Carly Saindon (Senior) Newcomers to Watch: Samantha Gorski (Junior), Jillian Grande (Junior), Danielle Pantano (Sophomore), Gabriella Paxi (Senior), Julie Robison (Sophomore), Vanesa Seguro (Junior) Outlook: Like the boys cross country team, the Newington girls will have a new head coach in Jen Deschenes-Emord. It will be her first year coaching the sport. The Indians’ only key loss from 2016 was Lucia Visconti. This year’s squad returns a good mixture of talent including seniors Angelina Zacharias, Alexa Freitas and Carly Saindon along with sophomore Madelyn Gentile. There are also a bunch of new runners on the team that should provide plenty of depth. But the key to a successful season will be for the team to stay healthy.
